Michaela Blogs About Flat Stanley

* Flat Stanley is a pen pal program that fourth grade participates in each year. Stanley, from the popular book series, "Flat Stanley" by Jeff Brown, was flattened after a bulletin board fell on his head. Because he is now two-dimensional, kids across the country are mailing Flat Stanley and writing about the wonderful adventures they are having with him.

Michaela from Mrs. Hawthorne's class writes about her Flat Stanley experience...

A few weeks ago, I wrote a story about Flat Stanley and sent it to my teacher’s dad. His name is Mr. Carter. A few weeks later, I received a letter back from Mr. Carter. You wouldn’t believe what he wrote about! He wrote about a Thanksgiving trip to the mountains with Flat Stanley. They stayed in a cabin. In addition to Stanley, Mr. Carter also brought his adorable dog, Howie. Howie is only five months old. In Tennessee, they went to the Outlet Mall near Gatlinburg and to Cade’s Cove.

You wouldn’t believe how much I adored Mr. Carter’s story. It taught me so much about writing. No wonder my teacher is such a great writer - she must get it from her dad! To start off, Mr. Carter wrote excellent similes, such as “as thin as paper”. He also had great sentence variety. He wrote both statements and questions, such as do you think Stanley will ever become a boy again? My pen pal also indented and used good grammar. He used great details too, which helped me visualize the story, such as a Pac-Man game in the fishing decorated cabin. Everything you could imagine was in there. It was an awesome story! I am so thankful that he spent time to bring Flat Stanley on a Thanksgiving trip to the mountains and wrote a story about it and sent it back to me.
